Borsa İstanbul VIOP participates in 18th Association of Futures Markets (AFM) Conference

Borsa İstanbul Derivatives Market (VIOP) participated in the 18th Association of Futures Markets (AFM) Conference held in Krakow, Poland on April 23-24, 2015. The Conference attracted participation from the senior executives of the derivatives exchanges of particularly emerging markets, and discussed the current problems in the derivatives markets in general, and possible solutions.

Borsa İstanbul VIOP Group Manager Muammer Çakır moderated the panel on currency futures contracts, exchanging views with David Emerick, Senior Director, Head of FX, CME Europe; Rinjai Chakornpipat, Managing Director, Thailand Futures Exchange; Károly Mátrai, CEO, KELER CCP, Hungary; and Septimiu Stoica, CEO, Romanian Commodity Exchange. In the panel, Çakır said that they attracted the currency futures pre-dominantly traded OTC in Turkey to VIOP platform, thereby increasing VIOP’s traded value by 4-5 fold compared to 2013, and added that the daily traded value exceeded TL 1 billion, reaching an all-time-high. Çakır also said that VIOP broke an open position record with more than 400,000 contracts, sharing with the participants the changes and strategies behind that success.

Çakır also delivered a speech at the panel entitled “Cross Exchange Partnerships”, moderated by Otto E. Naegeli, Chairman of the Board, CME Clearing Europe. Çakır talked about the comprehensive cooperation agreement that Borsa İstanbul entered into with the London Stock Exchange, the strategic cooperation with NASDAQ and the contracts signed with the London Metal Exchange (LME)/Hong Kong Exchanges (HKEx). Çakır underlined that Borsa İstanbul VIOP offers a wide product range, and works towards the vision of becoming the preferred derivatives platform thanks to central counter-party guarantee in managing risks, as well as increased liquidity.
